The Apostle John is instructed by Christ to write down everything he sees in a vision in a book and “send it to the seven churches, to Ephesus and to Smyrna and to Pergamum and to Thyatira and to Sardis and to Philadelphia and to Laodicea.” These letters of Christ were addressed to seven first century Christian communities of modern Turkey and still speak to the church today. In each of the seven letters, the risen and ascended Christ emphasizes, either in rebuke or in commendation, one particular characteristic of an ideal church. They tell us what Christ thinks of His church both as it is and as it should be. Somewhere in these letters, we’re going to find Rincon Mountain Presbyterian Church. It’s my prayer that the study of these letters will call us to repentance and renewal, humble and shame us, and encourage us to be courageous and to perseverance. May our ears be opened to hear “what the Spirit says to the churches.”
