Colossians 1:18

Main Point: The Lord Jesus Christ is the only head of the church; he has given to the church all offices necessary for the edification of His Church and the perfecting of His saints.

I. Christ is the leader of his body of which he is the head (Colossians 1:18a; Ephesians 4:15, 5:23).

A. Jesus Christ is the source and root of life

B. Jesus Christ alone holds the ultimate position of governing and authority in the church

II. Elders sit as representatives of Jesus Christ in the local church.

A. Old Testament ‘elders’

1. Appointed (Exodus 18:13-27; Numbers 11:16,17)

III. Deacons display Christ as they lead in acts of service.
